Death on the Nile
by Lies
When, during an exclusive cruise on the Nile, the beautiful, successful Linnet Ridgeway is murdered in her sleep, the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot immediately starts his investigation of the curious case. Among the passengers of the ship, he finds an extraordinary web of motives, suspects and alibis- yet “the little grey cells” are determined to find out the murderer’s identity, and that they will.
A great screen adaptation of the novel by Agatha Christie, “Death on the Nile” pictures an interesting crime story with the help of a beautiful location and, especially, a lot of great acting. Great names like Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Bette Davis and- of course- Maggie Smith truly bring the movie- thus, the book- to life.
Dame Maggie, performing a relatively small part this time, manages, as usual, to combine both humour and drama into one, modest yet interesting, character. Her Miss Bowers is comedy gold next to the Mrs Van Schuyler of Bette Davis- and yet at the same time, she manages to put quite a bit of tragedy into her character with one mere line.
In short; just another must-watch movie- and not just because of the crime story.
